Our Story

Coming from Singapore, we have always been accustomed to the clean air. However, this luxury has been disrupted by many environmental factors–the most prevalent being forest fires. Hence, our journey began with a simple idea: reduce forest fires, specifically in Indonesia.

Forest fires in Indonesia, particularly those involving peatlands, have had significant impacts on Singapore through transboundary haze pollution. The primary cause of these fires is the slash-and-burn method used to clear land for palm oil plantations. A notable incident occurred in June 2013 when fires in Riau, Sumatra, created severe haze that disrupted daily life in Singapore. The Pollution Standards Index (PSI) in Singapore hit hazardous levels, peaking at 401 on June 21, 2013, forcing schools to close and causing widespread health issues (Eco-Business).

Indonesia experiences a significant number of forest fires annually, primarily due to land clearing practices for agriculture. In 2019, Indonesia reported 3.1 million hectares of land burned, leading to the emission of approximately 604 million tonnes of CO2 (UN News). This accounted for a substantial part of the country's greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the severe environmental impact of these fires.

We propose a solution: bee farming. Bee farming, or apiculture, can play a significant role in preventing forest fires. By promoting sustainable land use and providing alternative livelihoods, bee farming reduces the need for slash-and-burn agriculture, a major cause of forest fires. Bees also require healthy, diverse ecosystems to thrive, which incentivizes the conservation of forests and natural landscapes.

At Nektar Emas, we will partner with farmers from Madu Tunkung in Jambi, Indonesia to provide you with high-quality, natural honey. All profits will be given back to the farmers and the local community in Jambi, Indonesia.

From the heart of our bee farms to your table, our honey embodies the essence of purity and sustainability.
